Navigating the wide world of wallcoverings
If you’re one of those people who believe wallcoverings are old news or outdated, then allow me to change your mind. Much like a lovely piece of art, wallcoverings add interest and richness to any space! When considering the use of wallcoverings, it is important to choose a style proportionate to the intended space. For instance, small patterns can get lost in a room with high ceilings, vertical stripes tend to make a space look smaller, and horizontal stripes will make a room appear larger.
When it comes to designing with wallcoverings, the possibilities are endless and choosing the right pattern can really make or break a space, so let’s talk about some of my favorite ways to tackle this design tactic!
Metallic wallcoverings are an enlightened way to add shine to any room by allowing the walls to reflect and play with the light. As you can see in the photo below, the gold metallic, in this stylized paisley pattern, enhances the brightness of the stunning sconce. We decided to take the blue hue within the wallcovering and carry it across to the powder room vanity for a cohesive design, giving the wallcovering an extra pop. Bold Prints in Small Spaces
Feeling adventurous? It’s time to break out the bold prints! If the thought of using an over-the-top wallcovering in a large space, or a frequently used room within your home, makes you a bit uneasy, then try it in a smaller area. Small rooms can be the perfect place to try daring patterns because they often look better displayed on a small wall rather than spread over a large one. See for yourself in the two photos below!
But, if you are feeling adventurous, these prints with personality aren’t just for small spaces. The wallpaper serves as the art factor and brings a luxurious feel to the room. The use of neutral furniture and drapery helps balance the aesthetic so this gorgeous wallpaper, by Celerie Kemble, isn’t overpowering. This is one of my most favorites EVER if you can’t tell!
There are endless possibilities when working with textural wallcoverings. They are the perfect choice when looking to add depth and a subtle statement, serving as a complement to the space rather than the star of the show. Natural Grasscloth wallcoverings are a go-to in my designs to soften a master bedroom. They add an earthy element with a hint of drama.
In the next image, we used a texture Masonite Board, via PanelMax, en lieu of a paper to gain this geometric depth – it looks like it’s practically moving! Since this pattern tends to trick the eye, we decided to use it as an accent wall as to not overpower the space.
Kid Friendly, Parent Approved
Let your creativity run wild when using wallcoverings in kids’ rooms! I absolutely love the butterfly botanical pattern in the photo below. Using it all over the room was the right choice to make a cohesive design statement. The pattern adds a level of sophistication to the space while still being playful.
All Things Stripes
For a tailored look I tend to gravitate toward stripes – I have never met a room that wouldn’t be handsome in a stripe! In the photo below, you will notice the subtle lines in the pattern help bring the entire design together, and pull the beautiful mink color from the drapes. This stripe also has a hint of metallic which reference the 2 miles (literally) of nickel chain in the Hudson chandelier. A true classic!
I hope by sharing my favorite wallcovering styling tips you will be able to weed through the endless pattern possibilities and focus on what it is you’re looking to achieve within the space. For more design inspiration and tips, follow me on Pinterest and Instagram!
