Before & After: Zen Oasis

Interior design is a transformative process. Through an artful combination of strategic planning and creative thought, designers thrive on creating a completely new space with each project – seeing a project through from beginning to end is, without a doubt, the best part about our job!

Of course, a full redesign is no small feat. There’s consulting and space planning, furniture selection and custom design work, textile choices and installations, and all of the small details in between that combine to create the finished product shown in all of the glossy photos proudly displayed here on the blog.

But what happens before the final photos? Let’s take a look at how our fabulous team took a blank slate and turned it into our client’s vision of a Moroccan oasis throughout the home.

As is the norm this time of year, our days around the office are filled with one install after another as we work to wrap up our projects in time for our clients to show off their new interiors during holiday festivities.

Installs bring the importance of every detail into full focus. This “install season” got me thinking about one of my favorite aspects of detailing: tile. What’s in a Renovation?

Every home has so much potential to be beautiful! As an interior designer, it is incredibly rewarding to see the transformation that occurs during a major renovation. When walking through a home that has been lovingly cared for over the decades but has never been updated, I dream of all that can be done to bring it up-to-date so it functions perfectly for a young family. While I love designing homes from the ground up, my heart lies in a gut renovation project.

Looking back on one of my favorite projects, I remember the importance of both looking at every detail and stepping back to see the big picture throughout the entire process. Thanksgiving Tablescapes!

Thanksgiving is TOMORROW, and I’m so looking forward to it. It doesn’t get better than a day (or two) full of food, friends, family, and, as an extra bonus, fabulous tablescapes!

To be completely transparent, although I LOVE seeing those Insta-worthy table settings, I usually keep it pretty low-key with the tableware on Thanksgiving… I pour creativity into my client’s designs during the week, and once the holidays come around, I just like to enjoy family time with Michael, our two girls (Liv and Ryan) and extended family. Thanksgiving in the Umansky household usually consists of waking up to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, cooking with family, quickly enjoying a meal chock full of carbs, and then cheering on our favorite football team (Hook ‘Em!) while slipping into a food-coma.

No matter how you like to celebrate – whether that means breaking out the fine china, keeping it laid-back with recyclable paper plates, or something in between – these inspiring tablescapes by some wonderful designers will trigger your festive side and get you in the mood for Thanksgiving!

Interior for Your REAL Life

From stunning furniture collections to unique textiles, drapery, accessories and more, the world of interior design is filled with unlimited creative opportunity. Because we have so many options, we are often frozen and in decision-making limbo. All of the choices are, of course, a great problem to have! To break free and start moving your design forward into reality, it is of the utmost importance to honestly assess the real needs of your family, not just your aesthetic preference. For families with children and busy schedules (like mine), I strongly urge clients to consider the importance of the design of your most hectic spaces like the mud room and utility room. So, whether you’re getting organized well before the holidays or hastily stashing toys in the closet as your guests ring the bell, you will surely thank your lucky stars you went with a practical – yet insanely beautiful – interior design!

How To: A Neutral Hue

Let’s play a lightning round of Design Myth Busters, shall we?

Myth: Neutral colors create a drab interior design.

FALSE: While I LOVE a healthy dose of color in my designs, neutral tones can create inviting, cozy and serene interiors and have the ability to create retreat-like spaces in your home.

One of my favorite things about neutrals, aside from the soft and warm environments they create, is the way they allow other design elements – like texture and pattern – to take center stage. Read on to discover the benefits of going “au-neutural” in your color palette!

Statement Stairs: 3 Ways to Take a Design to the Next Level

A little fun fact about me: I’ve always been fascinated with space planning, layouts and the structure of homes. I even spent several years studying architecture, which culminated in a Master of Architecture degree. I love it that much!

With this background, I often approach a new interior design project with an architectural eye: seeking opportunities for big changes. However, our clients’ homes can often be vastly improved with just small cosmetic updates. While each project is unique, one area that can have the most impact on your home and the way you live is your staircase.

Read on to see how to take stair design to the next level without a total renovation.
