We’re still a month away from the official start of summer, but the warm temperatures are making it feel like summer’s already here. It’s got me dreaming of lounging by the pool on the weekends, dining al fresco and late night hangouts at the fire pit with family and friends.

When you think about transforming your outdoor space into a relaxing backyard lounge, the most important thing to remember is you want the space to be somewhere where you can sit back, relax and enjoy. You want to make sure there’s plenty of seating and shade, but don’t be afraid to incorporate fun colors, bold patterns and even some accessories into your design!

Here are a few of my favorite ways to create a backyard lounge you’ll enjoy with friends and family all summer long.

The Best Seat in the House

Lounge chairs (or even a daybed!) in a bright white outdoor fabric are a must for any backyard. They give guests a comfy spot to sit when they aren’t in the pool and are perfect for lounging and soaking up the sunshine.

Water-friendly chairs placed in the shallow end of the pool are a great option too. You get to lounge and enjoy the pool at the same time. Because why would you leave the pool when you can relax in the water?! And kids love using these chairs too.

Plenty of Shade

Protection from the sun is incredibly important, especially in the Texas heat! Huge umbrellas not only provide shade but are a great way to introduce a fun pattern into your outdoor lounge design. This navy and white striped umbrella is a fun take on the classic striped beach umbrella.

Al Fresco Dining

Gathering around the table for a meal fresh off the grill is my idea of the perfect summer night. So when you’re thinking about your outdoor dining area, consider using a simple, neutral color palette for the seating. Wood and metal are great options and can handle the environmental elements with ease. Add pops of color with your barware, seat cushions and serving dishes to seamlessly transition between indoors and outdoors.

Fireside Chats

Whether you’re chatting with friends and family or roasting marshmallows for s’mores with your kids, gathering around the outdoor fireplace or fire pit is the perfect way to end a summer evening. Use outdoor chairs and a sofa to create an extra cozy seating area by the fire.

Don’t be afraid to show off your style. Incorporate a coffee table with a few accessories in the center of the seating arrangement. Or add a side table next to a sofa to give guests a place to put their drink.

Don’t skip the accessories!

Accessories aren’t just for inside. Line the edge of your pool with some fabulous lanterns, candles or whimsical decorative objects. Use oversized plants to provide additional shade for the pool. These pieces instantly elevate your outdoor space and make it feel special.

To make the outdoor space feel more like a living room, add a few decorative pillows. You can use them on lounge chairs to add a nice pop of color or a fun pattern. Use them on the sofa so you can curl up with them and your favorite book by the fireplace.

The key to designing a backyard lounge is to think of it like you would an indoor space. Anything you do inside you can do outdoors! Make sure there’s comfortable seating, use pieces to add a splash of color or pattern and definitely incorporate some stylish accessories. You want the space to be warm and welcoming to your guests.
