Whether it’s a master suite or a guest room, the bedroom is one of the most important spaces in your home. It’s where you enjoy time with your family on lazy Sunday mornings and where you recall the day with your spouse before bed. And of course, it’s where you sleep! Since you spend one-third of your life sleeping, you want to have a bed that allows you to honor that time.
There’s something about a stunning headboard that elevates the ritual of going to sleep. It pulls the focus of the room towards the most important piece – your bed!
From intricately detailed to upholstery-covered, from panoramic to traditional, there are many fabulous headboard designs. Today I’m sharing my tips for choosing the perfect headboard and a few headboard design ideas.
Selecting Your Perfect Headboard
Before you create a custom headboard or look for headboard inspiration, you’ll want to think about the size, type, and style.
Getting is the first step in
selecting a headboard. Traditional headboards are about the same size as your mattress. If you decide to use a panoramic or custom headboard, you can create any size you want. Knowing the position of the headboard on the wall will determine what size headboard you need.
Platforms and frames are two common types of headboard designs. Frame headboards are more traditional and easier to install. Platform headboards have a more contemporary vibe, but take longer to install.
Style is also important to think about when it comes to your headboard design. Decide whether you want your headboard to be the focal point or provide a neutral background. No matter what style you choose, you want the headboard design to coordinate with the rest of the space.
Personality-Packed Headboard Designs
Headboards are the perfect way to add personality and make your bed one-of-a-kind. Opt for something chic and modern by using graphic prints, vibrant colors or luxurious fabrics. For a more subtle statement, focus on the details. Tufts or pleats on a headboard are classic, sophisticated, and elevate the look of your bedroom.
A metallic headboard adds a bit of edginess and is perfect for making a statement. A padded, upholstered headboard is aglamorous way to add texture or provide a neutral background for the other furnishings in your room. The great thing about upholstered headboards is that they can be reupholstered for years (and many styles) to come.
Unexpected Headboard Design Ideas
You know I love incorporating unexpected design elements and using a faux Boxwood hedge as a headboard is certainly unexpected! It’s playful, whimsical, and ties the green hues from the painting into the room. The side table and dramatic black and white flooring makes the space feel modern and feminine.
I just love a room divider for a unique headboard design! For one of our clients, we used an antique room divider they found during their travels as a headboard in their bedroom. It brings a worldly, delicate feel to a more masculine space.
Detailed Headboard Designs
This custom headboard crafted by is anything but boring. We used a neutral wool fabric from and paired it with a gorgeous magenta fabric. The pop of magenta peeking out from the pleats gives this traditional headboard a fresh, modern vibe.
This makes it seem like you have a piece of art above your bed. The intricate cutouts give it a tropical, exotic feel which I love. The whitewashed finish is the perfect blend of bohemian and contemporary styles.
Designer Headboard Inspiration
is one of my go-to sources for inspiration. I love her bright, airy style and how she uses eclectic pieces in fresh ways. The way she used to bring movement and visual interest to this crisp all white space is fabulous!
In this bedroom, Emily used to make the bed the room’s focal point. The contrast of the deep blue against the blush immediately draws your eye. The velvet fabric adds a luxurious touch and helps ground the design.
is another designer I’m inspired by. This proves you can make a bold statement without using bright colors. The sharp lines on the headboard are the perfect contrast to the curved lines of the artwork above the bed and the lamps. It’s a stunning combination.
I love that you can use a headboard to add color, texture, and detail into your bedroom. You can use it to create a focal point, create contrast or add movement. Whether you decide to use an upholstered headboard or one with unexpected details, it will transform the space. And if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can have a custom headboard created!
The possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing your perfect headboard! Personally, my favorite looks are lush and upholstered, blending a feminine texture (soft, padded) with a more masculine color (moody navy or deep gray).
