Fall is the best season: 9 reasons why this is a fact

Sound the sirens, and roll out the banners – fall is here! I get so excited to see the season transition away from summer, and now I can finally say my favorite time of year has arrived. It’s a legit obsession, ladies and gents. Every year, October 1 is marked on my calendar as “Halloween decorating,” and I love everything about fall- the cooler weather, pumpkin carving with my twin girls and all of the cozy, holiday décor!

If cozy décor, fall colors and Halloween aren’t enough to convince you that fall is, in fact, the superior season, take a look to see (in no particular order) my top reasons why I believe fall is the real “most wonderful time of the year.”

Costa Rica: My Seaside Escape

If you have spent any time on my blog, you already know I have a tendency to draw interior design inspiration from almost every place I visit. From the Sagrada Familia in and the eclectic streets of to the southern charm of and Central Park in , even on vacation, I just can’t help but wear my design hat.

While this figurative hat is a permanent staple in my wardrobe, I do recognize the importance of “unplugging” from the hustle and bustle of a busy work life, and recently took full advantage of the opportunity to do just that on a trip to Costa Rica to celebrate my husband Michael’s 40th birthday!

For the big birthday bash, we, along with our closest friends, headed to the coastal paradise for a long weekend of relaxation, celebration and, of course, a little interior design inspiration.

Here’s a peek into my trip and the fabulous colors and textures I spotted along the way.

Tour My New Home!

Okay, so I don’t technically have a new home, but with all of the renovations I completed recently, it kind of feels like I do!  It really is amazing what a few small projects can do to transform a home, and I’m so excited to share the results of the recent facelift I gave to my own historic Houston bungalow.

Like many of my ideas, the project started with the small goal of repainting the front door, and quickly snowballed into “just a few more projects.” Fast-forward a couple months and we now have a shiny new front door, an updated entryway, fab new built-ins in the girls’ playroom and master bedroom, and a few more fun improvements that make life just a little easier.

Of course, the updates didn’t happen overnight (or without a few minor meltdowns), but I absolutely LOVE how everything turned out! Read on to get a tour of my “new home.”

Perfecting Your Home Office

I have noticed that more and more floor plans include a home office or study. In fact, home offices now seem to come standard in the majority of new homes- great news for remote workers and entrepreneurs like myself. It’s even better news for an interior designer who LOVES arranging a new space for fab and functional efficiency (me, again!).

A desk, plenty of shelving and extra storage are no-brainers when designing a study, but creating a space that ignites inspiration and enthusiasm takes lots of planning. Blending business necessities with a homey influence can get tricky since most pieces have either the style of a home or of an office. While the challenge can be difficult, it’s definitely not impossible!

Here are my tips to turning a home office into a practical and personalized workspace.

The Perfect Kitchen

Full disclosure: I am certainly not an expert chef… Honestly, cooking kind of freaks me out! That said, what I lack in culinary know-how, I make up for in my love for designing the perfect spaces for others to create delicious masterpieces! In my classically current designs, I love creating a space where laughter and memories happen. From bubbly brunches to Sunday dinners, weekend celebrations and even homework time, the kitchen easily becomes one of the most central places to gather in a home – making it one of the most important spaces.

Throughout a kitchen’s interior design process, functionality and livability need to coexist with fabulous style. Here are my top priorities when designing the kitchen of your dreams.

By Tara Scott-Johnson,

No matter the size of your home, clutter can quickly consume your space and leave you feeling a little claustrophobic. Out of necessity, and small spaces dwellers have learned how to rid themselves of unnecessary clutter. Let’s take our from the folks that know square footage comes at a premium and every inch of space should be utilized in a creative way – the professional organizer.

The professional organizer has mastered the art of decluttering homes with this simple process. Starting with three boxes marked SAVE, DONATE, and TRASH, go through each room meticulously and purge the space. The goal is to have less items in the SAVE box once the purging process is complete. This process not only declutters your space, it declutters your soul.

The -based Professional Organizer, , tells Chron, “ is your friend!” Reeves stocks his own home with boxes, trays, and other receptacles to hold and store just about everything. Most storage containers can be stored in closets and under beds. But, some containers are decorative enough to sit on bookcases,  open shelving, or stacked on the floor.

Let’s tackle clutter with these creative storage ideas room-by-room:

Trend Watch: Boho Chic

First, the truth: I hesitate to comment very often on interior design trends. While I love the newest of the new, my classically current design philosophy shies away from incorporating “trendy” pieces into my interiors simply for trend’s sake.  Above all, interiors should be timeless, fine, comfortable, and a representation of the real you! For many reasons, I abhor disposable design and never purchase an item for myself that I don’t absolutely love and see being part of my life forever. All that said, there is one look that is currently trending that I am totally over the top about right now: Boho Chic.

This look is a natural progression of the Scandinavian Modern look that was all the rage last year and is still super hot. I have my eye on Boho right now because I am working on a fabulous interior design project in Houston’s Highland Village neighborhood. Our client loves contemporary style and asked us to soften the space with the natural, handmade elements of which the Boho look is known. Alongside the uber-talented Ohorona24.in.ua designers, , principal designer, and , interior designer, I have collected the BEST of the Boho Chic trend.

These are pieces that are bench-made by artisans, lovingly and thoughtfully crafted, and will have longevity and relevance long after this look reaches a fever pitch.
