Thanksgiving Tablescapes!

Thanksgiving is TOMORROW, and I’m so looking forward to it. It doesn’t get better than a day (or two) full of food, friends, family, and, as an extra bonus, fabulous tablescapes!

To be completely transparent, although I LOVE seeing those Insta-worthy table settings, I usually keep it pretty low-key with the tableware on Thanksgiving… I pour creativity into my client’s designs during the week, and once the holidays come around, I just like to enjoy family time with Michael, our two girls (Liv and Ryan) and extended family. Thanksgiving in the Umansky household usually consists of waking up to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, cooking with family, quickly enjoying a meal chock full of carbs, and then cheering on our favorite football team (Hook ‘Em!) while slipping into a food-coma.

No matter how you like to celebrate – whether that means breaking out the fine china, keeping it laid-back with recyclable paper plates, or something in between – these inspiring tablescapes by some wonderful designers will trigger your festive side and get you in the mood for Thanksgiving!

3 Essentials for Holiday Entertaining

As the holidays continue to creep up and we begin to prepare our homes to entertain family members of all ages, now is the perfect time to talk about fabulous, yet functional, design tips. This topic is extremely important to me because I am a big champion of the idea that families with young and rowdy kids should not have to sacrifice interior design that is fit for the adults in the home.

With that in mind, here are three easy ways to get your home in shape for holiday entertaining for your gang of rambunctious cousins, perfectly polished aunts, football-watching uncles, fabulous in-laws and lovely grandparents.

Here are my top three strategies when designing a home to entertain for all ages, all year round.

Interior for Your REAL Life

From stunning furniture collections to unique textiles, drapery, accessories and more, the world of interior design is filled with unlimited creative opportunity. Because we have so many options, we are often frozen and in decision-making limbo. All of the choices are, of course, a great problem to have! To break free and start moving your design forward into reality, it is of the utmost importance to honestly assess the real needs of your family, not just your aesthetic preference. This will help you to create some practical magic in your design!

For families with children and busy schedules (like mine), I strongly urge clients to consider the importance of the design of your most hectic spaces like the mud room and utility room. While your guests get to enjoy the formal living room and dining rooms on special occasions, you will love your kids’ backpack drop zone every day!

So, whether you’re getting organized well before the holidays or hastily stashing toys in the closet as your guests ring the bell, you will surely thank your lucky stars you went with a practical – yet insanely beautiful – interior design!

How To: A Neutral Hue

Let’s play a lightning round of Design Myth Busters, shall we?

Myth: Neutral colors create a drab interior design.

FALSE: While I LOVE a healthy dose of color in my designs, neutral tones can create inviting, cozy and serene interiors and have the ability to create retreat-like spaces in your home.

One of my favorite things about neutrals, aside from the soft and warm environments they create, is the way they allow other design elements – like texture and pattern – to take center stage. Read on to discover the benefits of going “au-neutural” in your color palette!

To help narrow down my choices, I set my pre-Market criteria and decided the designs had to fall into one or more of the following categories: light, bright, bold and/or “contrasty.”

Costa Rica: My Seaside Escape

If you have spent any time on my blog, you already know I have a tendency to draw interior design inspiration from almost every place I visit. From the Sagrada Familia in and the eclectic streets of to the southern charm of and Central Park in , even on vacation, I just can’t help but wear my design hat.

While this figurative hat is a permanent staple in my wardrobe, I do recognize the importance of “unplugging” from the hustle and bustle of a busy work life, and recently took full advantage of the opportunity to do just that on a trip to Costa Rica to celebrate my husband Michael’s 40th birthday!

For the big birthday bash, we, along with our closest friends, headed to the coastal paradise for a long weekend of relaxation, celebration and, of course, a little interior design inspiration.

Here’s a peek into my trip and the fabulous colors and textures I spotted along the way.

Tour My New Home!

Okay, so I don’t technically have a new home, but with all of the renovations I completed recently, it kind of feels like I do!  It really is amazing what a few small projects can do to transform a home, and I’m so excited to share the results of the recent facelift I gave to my own historic Houston bungalow.

Like many of my ideas, the project started with the small goal of repainting the front door, and quickly snowballed into “just a few more projects.” Fast-forward a couple months and we now have a shiny new front door, an updated entryway, fab new built-ins in the girls’ playroom and master bedroom, and a few more fun improvements that make life just a little easier.

Of course, the updates didn’t happen overnight (or without a few minor meltdowns), but I absolutely LOVE how everything turned out! Read on to get a tour of my “new home.”
